Pruning the fruit trees
Of the three apple trees, only the combination dessert/cooking apple tree fruited abundantly last year. This young tree is growing too tall. The top of the vertical leader, and all crossing branches, were removed.
The cooking appple tree produced just two apples. and has developed very leggy branches. Very few subsidiary branches have developed. The leggy growth was cut back by one-thid to one-half.
The miniature dessert tree produced no fruit last year. Crossing and dying growth was pruned out.
The plum tree has produced substantial branch growth, but fruited on just two low lying laterals last year. Some branch growth was completely removed, and other branches trimmed by one-third to one -half. It was very difficult to identify any fruiting buds or one year growth.
